CAP Board approves G Line BRT station locations and standard station design within Capitol area

The board approved Metro Transit's proposed station locations and standard refuge-shelter design for four G Line BRT stations that will serve the Capitol area; staff said engineering and final siting will proceed in coordination with the Rice Street reconstruction and other partners.
The Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board on April 3 approved four proposed G Line arterial bus-rapid-transit station locations within the Capitol area and signaled acceptance of Metro Transit's standard station design for shelters and pylons.
Laura Gredeman, senior transit planner at Metro Transit, walked the board through four stations in the CAP Board area: Rice & Como, Rice & Fuller (to serve the future SEER site/MnDOT building area), Ryerson University (expected higher ridership and a medium-sized shelter because of the transfer to the Green Line) and the split platforms at Eleventh/Twelfth and Cedar. Metro Transit said station footprints will be integrated with the Rice Street capital reconstruction project and other street designs; final siting and engineering will be determined in that design process.
CAP Board staff noted the approval covered the location and the standard station elements (shelter, pylon with real-time information, lighting, cameras) and that, barring substantial design changes, CAP Board would not expect to return for further approval of station design details. The board approved the motion by roll call.
Why it matters: the G Line will replace or upgrade Routes 62/68 along the corridor and provide faster, frequent all-day service; station location decisions affect transit access for Capitol-area residents, state employees and visitors and tie into multimodal street reconstructions being planned by Ramsey County and the City of Saint Paul.
