Annual radon testing: district reports follow-up ventilation fixes after one high reading; all schools cleared

Scott Kaminski, director of safety and facilities, presented the district’s annual radon testing report on March 3. He said the district tests sites every five years using a licensed contractor (IEA) and follows Minnesota testing practice by sampling ground-floor rooms plus a portion of above-floor spaces.
Kaminski reported that most samples returned radon levels in the 0–1.9 pCi/L range. One test at Prairie Winds found an elevated reading in a room listed on the plan as a staff break room; Kaminski said the space had been converted to storage and was unoccupied. After increasing ventilation start and stop times and retesting during occupied hours, the site’s readings fell to the passing range.
Kaminski said the district will retest sites following major ground disturbance, such as secure-entrance construction projects, and that all schools are cleared and scheduled for follow-up testing in five years.
Board members offered no additional questions on the item.
