Board proclaims March Fine Arts Month, AmeriCorps Week; recognizes student and staff awards

The St. Johns County School Board unanimously adopted proclamations recognizing March 2025 as Fine Arts in Our Schools Month and March 9–15, 2025, as AmeriCorps Week during its March 11 meeting.
Jo Crowder, district program specialist for fine arts, read a proclamation noting the Florida Department of Education has designated March as Fine Arts in Our Schools Month and urging support for dance, theater, music and visual arts programs across K–12. Board member Ms. Burrows moved adoption of the proclamation; Ms. Shaw seconded. Board members expressed appreciation for arts programming and student performances; the vote was unanimous.
Cheryl Freeman, coordinator for district volunteer services, presented an AmeriCorps Week proclamation that acknowledged national AmeriCorps members and local RSVP volunteers who tutor and mentor students. The board approved the AmeriCorps proclamation on a motion moved by Dr. Thompson and seconded by Ms. Pereira.
The board also recognized several student and staff achievements: two Ponte Vedra High School students invited to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, winners of the district Art in the Capitol competition, students who placed at the Florida civics and debate championships, the district's risk management team for earning the Florida School Boards Insurance Trust Risk Excellence Award, and the district accounting team for earning the Government Finance Officers Association and ASBO International certificates for financial reporting. Presenters included program specialists, principals and the district chief finance officer, Cathy Weber.
The board paused for photos and extended congratulations to students, coaches, teachers and staff acknowledged at the meeting.
