School board approves $563,837 amendment to FY25 budget to allow bonuses and grant spending

During the meeting, a finance staff presenter said one bill on the governor’s desk would provide a $1,000 bonus for all Standards of Quality (SOQ) positions that must be paid by June 1. The presenter said the district plans to process the bonuses if the General Assembly and the governor finalize the funding; if the bills are vetoed or funding is reduced, the presenter said the district would not spend funds that do not exist.
The presenter said the amendment adds $563,837 to the current budget from several sources: a $330,000 personnel item related to the SOQ bonus referenced in the pending state bill and several smaller grants, described as state school improvement grants and a microgrant. The presenter said those smaller grants are intended for materials, and specifically mentioned funding for accessories for school-issued phones and for the English learner literacy network. The presenter also said the district will cover remaining employees not funded by SOQ with savings from vacant positions.
Board member Ellen Slobodnick moved to approve the budget amendment and board member Zach Graham seconded. A roll-call vote recorded three yes votes — Dr. Jontae Jones, Ellen Slobodnick and Zach Graham — and two members absent. The motion passed 3–0 with two members absent.
The presenter told the board staff will not expend the bonus funds if the state does not approve the requisite legislation. The board scheduled presentation of the FY26 budget to the governing body on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Board Chambers; the board’s next regular meeting was announced for Monday, April 28, 2025.
The amendment was approved as read.
