Student leaders host 'Illuminate' Black Student Summit to boost engagement and professional skills

"The mission of this was to empower our students academically and professionally," Edmonds said. The one-day event brought campus and external speakers, workshops on mental health, financial literacy and networking, and a keynote by Dr. Angela Joyner. Edmonds said presenters and participants remained for other sessions, workshop conversations often ran longer than scheduled, and attendees provided positive feedback.
Edmonds encouraged sustaining the summit in future years and suggested partnerships with student organizations and outreach to high-school seniors as ways to expand participation and provide internship or career-connection opportunities.
Why it matters: The summit targeted student engagement—particularly among students of color—and linked campus programming to workforce-readiness topics and mental-health resources. The board heard the report during the student-affairs segment; no formal board action was taken on the summit report.
