Kosciusko County's GIS director, Bill Holder, asked commissioners for approval to pursue a state Geographic Information Office "seed grant" that can provide up to $30,000 per county to improve key geospatial datasets.
Holder said the grant's highest priorities are the road centerline and address point layers, which are foundational for NextGen 9-1-1 systems. "They're wanting to get every county ... to be at a certain level," Holder said, adding the funds could be used to work with a vendor to reach that standard. He noted the county's GIS receives substantial public use: "there have been 12,000,000 clicks last year on our GIS website," a figure cited by commissioners in support.
Holder said the request at the March 4 meeting is the first step in applying for the grant and that further approvals may be required from the county council. Commissioners moved, seconded and approved allowing staff to pursue the application by voice vote.
No contract or vendor was selected at the meeting; staff said subsequent steps may include vendor engagement and council-level approvals if the county chooses to accept grant funds.
