The commission received the March 10 Joint Conference Committee report on Laguna Honda Hospital: the committee said admissions processes have shortened compared with earlier months, but a waiver request to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to reassign or certify 120 skilled nursing beds remains difficult and will require sustained effort.
The JCC report said DPH and Laguna Honda leadership will continue working with CMS, the California Department of Public Health and the city attorney’s office to pursue the waiver, and noted that one of the major issues is persuading CMS that adding a third bed in rooms would benefit residents and discharge flow.
Members of the public urged more frequent public updates on the waiver and on admissions. Commenters also said loss of the 120 beds would push San Franciscans into out‑of‑county skilled‑nursing placements. The commission then took the JCC’s recommended consent calendar of Laguna Honda policies and approved it by voice vote without recorded roll‑call opposition.
