Republic Services gives annual update to Perry City on recycling, fleet electrification and route growth

The presenter said Republic Services serves a broad set of Utah municipalities and described local service levels and tonnage. On recycling markets, the presenter described the effect of China’s import restrictions and said U.S. recycling infrastructure is adapting with new domestic processing options, polymer recovery centers and other end-use markets but that market changes affect pricing and the value of collected recyclables.
The presenter discussed electric collection trucks being used in other markets. He said modern electric collection vehicles perform well in cold weather and that a typical range cited was about 80 miles between charges. He noted operational tradeoffs: routes must be planned around charging, and fleets often keep a cover truck to maintain service if electric vehicles are out of rotation. The presenter said transitioning to electric trucks requires a substantial upfront investment in vehicles and charging infrastructure and that cities considering the change may see better economics if several nearby jurisdictions participate.
Council members asked about noise differences from electric trucks, charging range relative to rural routes, the need for backup trucks and equipment access at collection points. The presenter recommended route design that avoids driver backing and said Republic is available to consult on access and routing.
On recycling performance and participation, the presenter cited diversion rates of roughly 17% to 30% for municipalities and said participation can be seasonal. He invited council members to arrange a tour of Republic’s recycling and transfer facilities.
