County awards bridge replacement contracts; approves federal letting for Bridge 89

White County commissioners on March 18 reviewed bids for multiple bridge replacement projects, took some bids under advisement and later awarded contracts for Bridge 17 and Bridge 54 to Milestone Contractors.
Bids were opened for replacement of bridges referred to in the meeting as Bridge 17 and Bridge 54. Three contractors submitted bids; Milestone Contractors’ combined low bid was $1,887,500, LaPorte Construction submitted the next lowest, and H.I.S. Construction submitted the highest bid. After a staff review recommended Milestone as the lowest responsive bidder, commissioners voted to accept Milestone’s bid and award the contract.
Separately, county engineers discussed Bridge 89 (referred to as Bridal 89 in the transcript) as a federally funded project administered through INDOT. Staff presented final tracings and asked commissioners to sign the plans so INDOT can advertise the project for a July letting, with construction slated for post‑Labor Day and re‑opening before Memorial Day of the following year. Commissioners approved signatures to move the project to INDOT letting; the project will receive 80% federal reimbursement under the federal aid program.
Staff and commissioners also discussed related roadwork along 900 East, including multiple culverts and box culverts that will be addressed as part of a multiyear plan of work. Commissioners said the two bridge replacements were the first step in a larger plan to eventually pave and rebuild longer stretches of road. County staff noted the projects will require coordination with utilities and drainage work.
