St. Joseph County Council approves small salary correction and unpaid election stipend

The St. Joseph County Council on an unanimous vote passed Bill 12-25, amending Ordinance 76-24 to adjust salaries for 2025 and to pay a missed stipend related to the election board.
Councilman Tanner, reporting the committee recommendation, said the amendment is a “small item,” explaining that the clerk’s salary increase equates to a $144 change and that a stipend due for the election board was not paid last year. The committee moved the bill forward with a favorable recommendation.
The council opened and closed a public hearing without speakers. Councilman Catanzarites moved for passage and Councilman Tanner seconded. During roll call all nine members present voted yes: Councilman Figg; Councilwoman Shabazz; Councilwoman Drake; Councilman Rutten; Councilwoman Hess; Councilman Thomas; Councilman Catanzarites; Councilman Tanner; and President Jentzel. The motion carried 9-0.
The ordinance language as read by the clerk references amending “ordinance 76-24, the same being an ordinance to establish salaries and fixing the numbers of employees of St. Joseph County for the year 2025,” and the council directed that the clerk’s pay adjustment and the outstanding election-board stipend be implemented as written in the bill.
Because the action was a corrective salary adjustment and payment of an owed stipend, council members did not request additional staff follow-up during the meeting.
