Commissioners approve application to renew PHEP emergency-preparedness grant

St. Joseph County commissioners voted March 4 to approve the health department's request to apply for a Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) grant from the Indiana State Department of Health.
Mike Scribe, director of operations for the health department, said the county has applied for and received PHEP funding for at least 10 years and uses it to support public preparedness activities and the public health coordinator's salary. For the current grant period the department routed coordinator salary through PHEP and used HFI funds to pay activities; Scribe said a similar approach is under consideration for the next cycle.
Scribe told the board the administration had signaled an intent to reinstate HFI funds but at a reduced level: "The last word that we received was that the governor was planning on reinstating HFI funds for next year... were expecting based on what Governor Braun has put out, to be funded at approximately $100,000,000 for the state," Scribe said, adding that the prior year had about $150,000,000 statewide. He characterized those figures as the most recent information available to the department and said there had been no recent formal update.
Commissioners approved the request to apply for the PHEP grant by roll call. Commissioners Hazen, Morton and Beckman voted yes; the motion carried.
