County health department to update safe-sleep materials; approves graphic-design contract

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners on March 4 approved a services agreement with graphic designer Brandon Walsh to update the countys safe-sleep educational materials.
Renata Williams, director of the care unit at the health department, told commissioners the contract, reviewed by department counsel, will update print and digital materials and include logos and county contact information for distribution to hospital systems, clinical providers, community organizations and parents. "One of our big initiatives is to help standardize safe sleep education throughout the county," Williams said.
Williams said materials will include printable and digital handouts and "safe sleep sacks" distributed to hospitals by health educators. The project will be paid from HFI funds, she said.
Commissioners praised the effort and asked how the department will ensure broad uptake. Williams said the health department maintains contacts with health systems and community-based organizations and plans a 2025 initiative to convene partners and ensure consistent messaging across settings.
The motion to approve the services agreement passed by roll call: Commissioners Hazen, Martin and Bassmeyer voted yes; the motion carried.
