Town officials discussed capital-project priorities and the town’s budget schedule as they prepare department budgets in April.
Board members said the new fire station remains a top capital priority and discussed how spending on the post office or roads would affect the amount available for the fire station. Staff said current figures are preliminary; in the meeting there were informal references to a cash balance that staff described as "about $3.50" after a land purchase (the phrasing in the meeting was informal and staff committed to provide clear numbers). Staff told the board there is flexibility to move funds between projects but asked members to identify the amounts they want included in the April budget so officials can produce a formal deficit or surplus analysis.
Staff noted department budgets are due in early April and asked board members to provide proposed figures for the new post office, road projects and how much to reserve for the fire station. The town will present department budgets for board review in April’s first meeting and follow up in a later April meeting to decide any tax changes, project reductions or other steps needed to balance capital priorities.
Board members discussed possible grant opportunities (CIB and county) and potential revenue changes related to regional park staffing and visitor impacts; staff noted projections for seasonal revenue and encouraged conservative budgeting.
No formal capital transfers or budget votes occurred at the meeting; staff requested proposed project numbers from board members to allow the town finance officer to model the budget and show any deficits before the April decision points.
