Council reviews equipment bids for parks and fire department shed under budget

Ferron City Council received updates on public-works equipment and a capital purchase for the fire station and discussed replacement options for mowing and grounds equipment.
A shed ordered for the fire station is scheduled for delivery on the 12th and was reported to be under the budgeted $10,000 amount. Council members said the purchase came from the capital projects fund.
Public-works staff described issues with the current rotary cutter and difficulty sourcing replacement parts; staff obtained a quote for a smaller Frontier rotary cutter priced at $17,733.50 that would better fit sidewalks and tighter areas. Council discussed durability, the risk of damage from rocks and tradeoffs between a smaller, more maneuverable cutter and larger commercial models. Staff suggested rebidding or asking the vendor (contact Russell Zimmerman) for a heavy-duty alternative (R-series) and recommended tabling immediate purchase until additional bids or brands are compared. One commenter estimated a quality bush hog could be found for about $2,500, but staff cautioned about long-term maintenance costs.
Council also reported that four firefighters are in wildland training and the fire truck is in service with radio installation complete.
Next steps: staff will obtain additional bids and brand comparisons for the rotary cutter and return with recommendations; the fire station shed delivery is scheduled and will be recorded when installed.
