Committee approves park renaming after community member; one councilman votes no

The Transportation, Energy and Utilities Committee approved a bill on March 4 to name a park after an individual, despite one council member expressing opposition to naming a public place for someone who is still living.
Edward Linsky, of the council auditor’s office, told the committee that an amendment to the bill "attaches the report from the planning and development department, which is a code requirement for this type of legislation." The committee adopted that amendment and proceeded to vote on the bill as amended.
Councilman Jimmy Peluso (District 7) said he remained opposed to the naming because the individual in question had not died. "I still am. This individual has not passed away. We're naming a park after somebody," Peluso said, adding that he typically waits several years after a person’s death before supporting a naming unless the person is a "titan in the community."
The committee recorded six yeas and one nay; the action was approved as amended.
