PELSB approves fiscal 2026 meeting dates, refers retreat planning to executive committee

The Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board approved its proposed fiscal year 2026 meeting dates and asked the Executive Committee to continue planning retreat activities and programming, the board announced March 21, 2025.

Board members discussed three retreat formats proposed by the Executive Committee: a three-day structure with two full days of public sessions and a community partner breakfast; a three-day structure with a half-day professional development session; and a condensed two-day retreat. Several board members, including Dr. Payne, said they opposed the condensed two-day option, arguing the longer format gives necessary time for stakeholder engagement and substantive work.

After discussion, the board voted to approve the fiscal year 2026 dates but referred planning of retreat activities and final program details back to the Executive Committee. Dr. Payne and others said approval of dates was needed so stakeholders could plan calendars, while leaving program details flexible to respond to national or state developments that could affect retreat content. Members clarified that the regular board meeting would take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2026.

The motion to approve the dates and leave activities to the Executive Committee was moved by Ms. Shumaker and seconded by Dr. Payne; a roll-call vote followed and the motion passed. The board will expect a program recommendation from the Executive Committee closer to the retreat date.

Board members asked that, when the Executive Committee returns a proposal, it include a scope of work for the retreat, membership for any planning subcommittees and a meeting structure, to help the full board evaluate and provide input prior to final approval.

The approved dates will be posted for public notice so that educators, district personnel and other stakeholders can plan to attend or participate in retreat sessions and the June 18 board meeting.
