St Clair board approves upcoming school calendar, converts scheduled early-release days to full staff days

The St Clair County Schools Board voted to approve the district's upcoming school calendar, converting four scheduled early-release days into full days off to accommodate staff training and family needs.

Board members said the change aims to give teachers uninterrupted time for state-mandated training requirements. "We tried to take the days that were already scheduled as an early out, and then those will be the four days that are completely the days off," a board member said during the meeting.

The calendar change was presented after discussion about state training requirements for staff. District presenters referenced a multi-hour training requirement for teachers tied to license renewal and other mandatory professional development; one speaker said the training requirement is "like 87 hours within a year," and that scheduling full days off rather than repeated early releases would ease childcare and scheduling burdens for families.

During the meeting a board member moved to approve the calendar and another member seconded the motion. The chair called for the vote: "All in favor, say aye." When members responded, the meeting record shows the motion carried.

The board did not attach an implementation timeline beyond adopting the calendar. District staff indicated they had discussed the schedule with teachers and attempted to align conference times to teacher preferences. Board members also noted the calendar change was intended to reduce the burden on families of younger students who must arrange child care for partial days.

Board member Jolene moved to approve the calendar and Connie seconded; the board approved the motion by voice vote with no recorded roll-call tally in the public discussion.

The approved calendar will be posted with other district materials; board members said they will share details with families and staff as the district finalizes logistics for the designated full days off.
