The Virginia Gas and Oil Board approved a petition by Pocahontas Gas LLC on March 8 to repool Unit CC34 and permit production under Oakwood 2 field rules rather than the Oakwood 1 rules previously authorized.
Kelly Berry, Pocahontas’s senior analyst for land records, said the unit was first pooled in 2020 under Oakwood 1 pooling rules and that the company now seeks to produce remaining coal‑bed methane under the Oakwood 2 method to reflect updated mining plans. Berry provided a map showing proposed future mining (2 South and 3 South panels) and explained how gas allocation and costs are being apportioned among the eighty 80‑acre units that touch the panels.
Berry presented estimated participation costs: the cost allocated to Unit CC34 for 2 South is $43,059.29 and for 3 South is $1,070,148.92. She said owners who want to participate would multiply their division of interest in each panel by the eligible cost for that panel to determine the dollar amount required for participation; that calculation is also the starting point for accounting a carried interest if an owner elects not to pay.
Berry told the board she will dismiss two respondents (Shelby and Finney) from the notice because records show they conveyed their interests to parties already noticed; the petitioner will file amended exhibits reflecting those conveyances and an updated Exhibit B2. Berry said one outstanding documentation item involving heirs of a prior owner remains pending, and she is working to obtain heirs’ documentation so payment may be made in the future.
After questions from board members about the pending documentation and the mapping, the board approved the repooling petition on a roll call. Vote recorded as Owens — yes; Harris — yes; Jansen — yes; Gibson — yes; Cochran — yes.
