Council approves $2,940 for surveyor office map digitization and $450 transfer for field laptop lease

The Dominion County Council approved two requests from the county surveyor’s office: a $2,940 additional appropriation to digitize aging maps and documents, and a $450 transfer from supplies to an equipment lease to fund a laptop/software lease for field mapping work.
Surveyor Ronald described one cabinet of older maps that are fragile and in need of professional scanning and preservation. He said a vendor experienced with county records had sampled the materials and that digitization would preserve originals, with long-term plans to move certain historical documents to the county library. He also said bridge plans and other materials had previously been scanned and uploaded to the county GIS by outside contractors.
A motion to approve the $2,940 appropriation was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote. Later in the meeting the council approved a separate transfer of $450 from supplies to equipment lease, described as a software lease for a laptop to be used in the field because of poor mobile data signals.
Surveyor Ronald said the work covered a single cabinet of very old documents (about 20–30 maps) and that the vendor could also pursue conservation techniques for fragile inks and paper. He noted digitization is cheaper than purchasing an industrial scanner that could cost about $50,000 and that the files would be handled in a manner similar to services offered by state archive vendors.
Both items were approved through routine motions; the clerk recorded the votes as voice approvals.
