Parks Director Miss Skelly told the Parks and Recreation Board on March 24 that design work will begin next week for Heritage Park and that the department expects a five‑month design phase aimed at moving dirt by the end of the year or early next year.
Skelly said the department will submit the Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) grant application the board previously approved and thanked residents who left supportive online comments; she said screenshots of public comments strengthen the grant application. She also reported three tennis grants—from the United States Tennis Association, the Tennessee Tennis Association and the USTA Southern section—totaling “almost $20,000” to help repair fencing and drainage at local tennis courts.
The parks director said the department received a grant from its insurance carrier to add security cameras across the park system; IT staff will support the camera installations in the coming months. Skelly also said the Sanders Ferry boat ramp project is nearing completion with a mid‑April target reopening.
On maintenance and operations, staff reported that recent storm repairs have reopened ball fields that were previously closed after flooding. Maintenance Supervisor Mister Cole said crews are replacing a washed-out walking trail near soccer with concrete to reduce future washouts and that a new timed gate opener at Veterans Park will improve access for permitted users.
Assistant Director Dallas Long and recreation staff detailed the many spring programs under way: youth and adult leagues, make-up games from storm cancellations, summer kids’ programs and employment postings for seasonal staff. Recreation supervisor Miss Hamlin provided dates and fees for Kids Club (June 9–July 18) and said registration will open with priority for returning families in mid‑April; she also announced a Special Needs Egg Hunt on April 10 at Mary’s Magical Playground.
Skelly closed by acknowledging department staff and volunteers who helped reopen fields quickly after storms and by asking board members and residents to continue commenting in support of the LPRF application.
The director said the facility‑naming resolution related to the Greenway name had been returned to the facilities‑naming committee by the general committee and that the facilities committee had not yet met; she said she would report back on timing when available.
Board members applauded staff work on cleanup, field repairs and new projects and asked staff to return with timelines and public notifications as design and construction milestones are reached.
