The Board of Trustees consented during the April 29 work session to place a Fire Council–recommended amendment to department bylaws on an upcoming board agenda. The amendment would remove the requirement that all ranks hold Firefighter II certification as a mandatory qualification.
A presenter reported that the Fire Council had unanimously approved the change, saying Firefighter II classes are infrequently offered and that the course content overlaps some material already covered in Firefighter I training. The council recommended encouraging attendance when classes are available but not making Firefighter II an absolute requirement for rank advancement.
Trustees indicated they would add the amendment to a future agenda for formal consideration. No final board vote on the bylaw change occurred at the work session.
Ending Staff will schedule the bylaw amendment for a formal board meeting and prepare the proposed language and any implementing instructions for the trustees to consider.
