Summary
Cherokee Nation education staff said an affirmative‑action hiring directive and a new round of college and career outreach will connect graduates to vacancies across multiple HR offices; community resume and interview workshops are planned starting in March.
Executive Director of Education Mark Vance and Executive Director Diane Kelly told the Cherokee Nation Education Committee they have begun coordinating with multiple human‑resources offices across tribal enterprises and departments to help place recent graduates into open positions.
Kelly said the chief signed an affirmative‑action directive in the fall of 2023 to give Cherokee Nation graduates a hiring advantage for vacancies. She and Vance said they have convened HR representatives across Cherokee Nation Businesses, the housing authority and the health department so graduates and program participants can be matched with openings and recruitment events.
Vance summarized recent and upcoming recruitment work: a college fair was held Feb. 27 in Tulsa and a follow‑up college fair is scheduled March 27 at Roland Casino. He said scholarship applications have a June 16 deadline. Vance also said staff will pilot community workshops that teach resume building, interview skills and how to complete the Cherokee Nation education/college application. He said the first community session will be at the Hulbert CCO on March 11, with other sessions planned in Nowata, Kansas and Marble City; staff will email the full schedule and registration details.
Vance described a construction fair and a round‑table meeting of HR representatives and recruiters; he said Melissa Payne presented a PowerPoint on issues related to the Freedmen during a recent lunch meeting to educate HR participants. Vance said the HR group will reconvene in about six months to collect data on hires and report back to administration.
Vance also provided a short list of upcoming cultural and school events — language‑learning activities at Dahlonega, an Oak John Conference in Durant, and Public School Appreciation Day March 25 at the Hard Rock — and asked legislative staff to distribute event dates to councilors' calendars.
Committee members asked for application and scholarship links; Vance said Carolyn Allen and other staff will email the dates and online resources to council members for distribution.
