Cherokee Nation public health highlights 13 heart-health events, plans spring walking series

Kim Chukulek, presenting the Cherokee Nation public health report, told the Tribal Council that February — heart-health month — included 13 events across the reservation with over 426 participants.
Chukulek said the events offered walking activities, cookbooks and educational material, and basic screenings such as A1C and cholesterol checks. She told the council that walking events will continue through spring and that event information is included in the council packet.
Several councilors asked about communicable-disease outreach and measles vaccination efforts. Chukulek said public-health staff are in continual discussion about outreach and will coordinate with medical leadership to provide the council with follow-up information.
Councilors also asked about arrangements with private exercise facilities and whether membership subsidies exist; Chukulek said she did not have that information at the meeting but would follow up.
No formal action or vote was taken on the public-health report; councilors generally offered thanks for the outreach and requested written follow-up on vaccine messaging and facility arrangements.
