Recreation director requests a 30-hour coordinator to expand city programs

On April 2, 2025, Aaron Wyatt, Recreation Department director, briefed the South Salt Lake City Council on programming and requested an additional 30-hour recreation assistant coordinator to increase the department’s capacity to serve residents.
Wyatt said the recreation department is small, relying on many part-time sports officials and volunteers, with five full-time staff, one part-time senior bus driver and a broader complement of part-time staff that enables programs at community and school locations. He said the department offered about 24 sports programs and community events last year and served roughly 3,700 participants; more than 100 volunteers supported programming.
Wyatt outlined upcoming events including youth soccer, flag football, t-ball and adult leagues, and noted community events such as Freedom Fest, Halloween Spooktacular, Santa’s Breakfast and the Senior Ball. To increase capacity, the department requested a 30-hour recreation assistant coordinator position with salary and benefits estimated in the $45,000–$48,000 range.
“We hope that people feel a sense of belonging and pride in their community when they participate in our programs,” Wyatt said, describing the department’s mission to build community unity through programs and events.
Council members thanked staff for the presentation; no hiring authorization or budget appropriation was made at the meeting. The briefing will inform the council’s upcoming budget deliberations.
