Public Works outlines accomplishments and seeks APWA accreditation for operations and succession planning

At the April 2, 2025 work meeting, Public Works Director Craig briefed the City Council on department accomplishments and said the department will prioritize American Public Works Association (APWA) accreditation in coming years to document operations and support succession planning.
Craig reported the department has 43 staff across street, fleet, water, sewer and stormwater divisions and summarized 2024 accomplishments: 100 storm drains adopted, 37 illicit discharge responses, 350 stormwater inlet inspections, 53 construction site inspections, 1,767,636 square feet of road improvements, 38,258 square feet of concrete repairs, 93 tons collected in curbside cleanup, 328 street signs installed or replaced and 1,585 fleet service actions with $216,900 in parts expenses.
He explained APWA accreditation would help standardize operating procedures, improve interdepartmental relationships (including parks and engineering), and document operations so that roles are clear if managers leave. Craig said accreditation work will involve multiple departments and staff training.
“It's really going to help us with creating our succession planning, looking at our operations and making some efficiencies,” Craig said, listing accreditation benefits for staff knowledge and departmental continuity.
No formal action was requested at the meeting; the briefing was intended to inform the council during budget planning.
