South Salt Lake mayor proclaims April Financial Literacy Month; state treasurer's office urges council support

Carice Thompson, outreach specialist for the Utah Office of the State Treasurer and a Clearfield City council member, spoke during public comment to ask the city council to back the mayor’s proclamation. Thompson said the treasurer’s office wants “every Utahan to be financially successful” and noted a newly completed virtual toolkit of resources available on the state treasurer’s website.
The proclamation issued by Mayor Sherry Wood cites the city’s Promise South Salt Lake goals — supporting education, safe housing, and economic opportunity — and characterizes financial literacy as “the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage one's financial resources effectively for lifetime financial security.” The proclamation text says the city “offers financial literacy workshops, 1 on 1 financial coaching, and other programs and services” through locations including the Promise South Salt Lake Co‑op.
In public comment, Thompson encouraged the council to support the mayor’s effort, saying the state treasurer’s office is prepared to partner with local governments on financial education. Thompson also referenced recent reporting that Utah households are carrying high levels of debt and said the toolkit was designed to help residents with budgeting, saving, borrowing and planning.
Mayor Wood read the proclamation aloud, including the formal declaration: “I Sherry Wood, mayor of the city of South Salt Lake do hereby proclaim that the month of April shall be known as financial literacy month.” The proclamation does not appear to have required a council vote during the meeting.
The proclamation highlights partnerships and local programs; officials encouraged residents to consult city and state websites for schedules of classes and coaching opportunities.
