Pam Chadbourne addressed the Environmental Stewardship Board during public comment, asking the board to pursue biodiversity surveys, restore free city hazardous-waste and large-item collection events, and promote competition among contracted waste-service providers.
Chadbourne suggested the board expand its existing tree and vegetation work to include inventories for “bats, bees, and butterflies,” saying those life surveys would better capture urban biodiversity. She also urged the city to refer to its waste program as “contracted waste services,” to encourage multiple contractor options and competition for both residential and commercial service models.
On waste-collection services, Chadbourne asked the board and staff to consider reinstating free collection events the city previously offered for hazardous waste, large-item drop-off and fall leaf collection. She argued such services were cost-effective to residents and supported sustainability goals. Chadbourne also praised outreach around Parks and Recreation ballot sign-ups and encouraged continued public engagement.
Board members and staff acknowledged her comments and said they would consider the suggestions as part of ongoing work on waste diversion and related outreach.
