The Colorado Springs School District 11 board voted April 2 to approve revised high‑school graduation requirements and to proceed with updating policy IKF and an exhibit that will provide operational guidance for counselors and families.
Superintendent Gahl and district staff presented the revised requirements, which were developed to align with the district’s graduate profile and to provide students with pathways that include peak experiences and career-oriented options. The board approved the change by roll call after staff said the exhibit would be attached to the policy and that additional technical edits could be made prior to final policy adoption.
Trustees asked several clarifying questions. Director Nelson asked about a notation in the exhibit that listed world language in bold; district staff clarified that the bolding did not make two years of world language a district requirement and that credits could be satisfied through CTE, VAPA or world language in that elective-flex category. The board also discussed how personal finance could be embedded in mathematics or social studies and confirmed that staff had deliberately placed flexible options so the district can adapt depending on pending state legislation.
District staff said a separate policy revision process will bring IKF (graduation requirements) into the policy manual and that the current exhibit would be converted to an attached exhibit consistent with the Colorado Association of School Boards guidance. Board members indicated they preferred a clear exhibit for families and counselors and asked staff to clarify unit titles and remove any unintended emphasis caused by formatting before the policy is posted for final adoption.
The motion to approve the revised graduation requirements passed by unanimous roll call. The policy revision (IKF) and exhibit will return for formal policy action at a future board meeting.
