District seeks emergency funds, schedules town hall as Jenkins Middle School repairs continue

Colorado Springs School District 11 told the board April 2 it will ask trustees to authorize “a couple million dollars” at a special work session on April 9 to begin repairs at Jenkins Middle School and enable partial occupancy for the next school year.
Superintendent Gahl said the district received a final report on the building’s deteriorating media center and gymnasium walls and plans targeted remediation work to allow incoming sixth graders to occupy the school wing. The administration said it is pursuing temporary mobile classrooms to house sixth and seventh graders during remediation so Jenkins can operate in partial occupancy for 2025‑26, with full three‑grade occupancy expected for 2026‑27.
The district scheduled a community town hall for April 10 at Doherty High School’s cafeteria to explain the remediation timeline, partial-occupancy plans and next steps. Superintendent Gahl said the town hall will focus in part on logistics for incoming sixth‑grade families and information about potential mobile units.
District staff described steps already taken: transportation operations that move approximately 400 students daily through a tented pickup area have been managed while displacements occurred; the administration thanked staff for the temporary arrangements. The superintendent said the board will be asked to approve funding for remediation at the April 9 special meeting.
Board members asked clarifying questions about which grades would be affected. The administration said current seventh graders at Doherty were likely to remain at Doherty for eighth grade, while incoming sixth graders into Jenkins would receive a traditional Jenkins sixth-grade experience in the renovated wing. The district also said staff are exploring options to bring displaced Russell students back to Jenkins.
Superintendent Gahl said more detailed plans and budget requests will be shared with families at the April 10 town hall and again in the board’s upcoming special work session.
