Monticello neighborhood supports new splash pad but asks commission to add shade on pool side

On April 2, 2025, the San Antonio Historic Review Commission approved a staff-recommended splash-pad project at Monticello Park (Case 2025-061) while a neighborhood representative asked the commission and staff to consider adding more shade on the pool side.

Bianca Maldonado, president of the Monticello Park Neighborhood Association, told the commission the association "supports the staff recommendation to build a splash pad," but "respectfully requests that future consideration be given to shade specifically on the pool side," noting the need for protection during extreme summer heat.

The association asked that future work consider both tree shade and shade structures so the pool area has balanced protection across its sides. Commission staff and the project representative discussed site features; the applicant’s architect described planting strips and low landscape walls intended to encourage parent supervision and avoid a fortified appearance. The applicant confirmed park hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Commissioners had no further questions. The motion to approve the case passed on a roll-call vote with all commissioners present voting yes.

The commission noted that permits will be required for any construction and that staff will email required authorizations within 10 days. The public comment on the item was limited to Maldonado; no written speakers asked to speak during the meeting.

The approval allows the project to move to permitting; details on shade additions were not mandated by the approval and remain subject to future review or separate staff recommendations.
