Tracy Police Detail Red‑Light Camera Rollout: 3 Locations, Warning Phase, 483 Warnings So Far

Tracy Police Chief Millington told the council on April 1 that the city’s red‑light camera program is in a warning phase at three intersections and that staff is reviewing events manually before issuing warnings or future citations.
The chief said the cameras monitor multiple lanes and that events can be triggered by drivers violating turn or signal laws even when other drivers are stopped at a green light. The three active camera locations are Coral Hollow & Eleventh, Tracy & Eleventh, and Schulte & International, and the program moved to the warning phase on the day of the update.
“Currently, we have three active locations,” Millington said. “When we do go live, we’ve yet to send out an actual citation. And then I want to also make the community aware that if you go to the tracypd.com website, there’s a page dedicated for our red light cameras. It’s frequently asked questions, concerns, ways to dispute.”
Millington provided operational statistics since the program was implemented in February: roughly 1,900 events were recorded across monitored locations, and 483 warnings were issued after staff review. He stressed that not every camera event results in a warning and that warnings and citations are reviewed by staff rather than issued automatically by the system.
The chief also reminded residents the department maintains a permanent prescription‑drug disposal container in the police lobby, available during lobby hours, and noted April 26 is national Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The police chief framed the red‑light camera program as a public‑safety initiative intended to reduce crashes, injuries and deaths at signalized intersections and encouraged drivers to stop before the limit line.
No formal council action was required on the update; staff said additional public information, FAQs and dispute procedures would be available on the Tracy Police Department website.
