UN warns Somalia humanitarian appeal is critically underfunded as hunger projections rise

The briefing cited an IPC projection that nearly 4.6 million people in Somalia are likely to experience high levels of hunger through June, and that about 1.8 million children under age 5 are expected to suffer acute malnutrition this year, including nearly 480,000 children projected to suffer severe malnutrition.
UN agencies, including the World Food Programme, reported that aid operations are being reduced or suspended where funding and access are constrained. The spokesperson said WFP paused distribution to 167,000 people in Upper Nile state where active fighting has disrupted operations, and warned that protection of staff and humanitarian assets is critical to delivering aid.
The UN called on donors to step up funding, saying sustained underfunding is forcing agencies to prioritize life-saving activities and reduce assistance for broader needs. The spokesperson attributed the low funding level to a lack of donor contributions and said the shortfall is a trend across multiple UN humanitarian appeals.
