During public comment, resident Lee Lashley said properties next door and nearby — identified as 500 Heathland Crossing (the corner of Heathland and Lawrence Road, formerly the Fred Breland property, referred to locally as “Sandpit”) and a parcel in the Fairways at Heath on Sawgrass (around 125 or 129 Sawgrass) — have been in intermittent development for several months with exposed materials left in the weather.
Lashley said neighbors have repeatedly raised concerns and asked the commission to record the complaint and suggested the city pursue an ordinance that would prevent property owners from preparing a site for construction and then abandoning the work, leaving partially demolished or prepared lots with construction debris exposed for long periods. Lashley said he is campaigning for city council and has heard “no less than maybe 20, 25 neighbors” who requested action.
David (staff) read the commission’s procedural notice that the commission cannot take action on items not on the agenda and told Lashley the concern would be placed on the record; commissioners suggested Lashley bring the matter to city council. Lashley said he will raise the issue with council as well as pursue planning and zoning channels.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; the comment was recorded on the meeting record and referred to staff for follow‑up to the appropriate body.
