The Newark City Council voted unanimously at its first 2025 meeting to approve the consent calendar and to consent to the mayor’s nomination of a councilmember to the Alameda County Housing Authority Housing Commission.
Councilmember Terrence Bridal moved to approve the consent calendar — which included approval of audited demands and the special and regular meeting minutes of Dec. 12, 2024 — and Councilmember Matthew Jorgens seconded. The motion passed 5‑0.
Later in the meeting the council considered a resolution nominating Councilmember Grindahl to serve on the Housing Commission of the Alameda County Housing Authority. The mayor’s nomination was moved by Councilmember Jorgens and seconded by Vice Mayor Little; the council approved the resolution by a 5‑0 vote. Mayor Michael Hannan thanked the nominee and encouraged the councilmember’s participation in county housing efforts.
City Manager Mr. Banoon announced two administrative notices: the city clerk is accepting applications to fill vacancies on the Planning Commission and on the Measure G/GEG oversight committee; applications are due to the city clerk’s office by Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. (Applicants must be Newark residents and at least 18.) He provided the city clerk contact as cityclerk@newark.org for further information.
During public comment, Mike Marzano of First Presbyterian Church invited council members and the public to the church’s 48th annual Martin Luther King remembrance event on Sunday at 3 p.m.; the mayor said the city will present a commendation at that event. The council also adjourned the meeting in memory of former President Jimmy Carter and local resident Mary Anne Annas.
No controversial votes were recorded; both formal motions passed unanimously.
