The Cerritos City Council confirmed multiple appointments to advisory boards and external committees during its March 27 meeting, approving nominations and administering oaths of office to appointees in attendance.
City Clerk Cindy Nava presented the list of eligible applicants and reminded the council that, per the municipal code, some applicants could serve up to 90 days beyond term expiration. Council waived several handbook requirements for tonight’s appointments, including the handbook’s registered-voter requirement. The council then nominated and approved a slate of civic volunteers for two-year terms to fill vacancies on boards and committees that currently remain in effect.
Nominations and confirmations included nominees submitted by newly seated council members. The council voted 5-0 to approve the slate of appointments that were moved and seconded on the floor. Appointees named during the meeting included (selection shown as approved on March 27):
- Planning Commission: Kerat Chauhan (appointed by Councilmember Pulido), Benjamin Au (appointed by Councilmember Hong), Armin Reyes (appointed by Councilmember Pulido) - Parks and Recreation Commission: Alex Camargo (Councilmember Say), Kathy Sarafka De Leon (Councilmember Pulido) - Fine Arts & Historical Commission (or split positions pending handbook action): Rosa Peters (Councilmember Say), Matthew Scammelhorn (Councilmember Pulido) - Property Preservation Commission: Anne Robles (Councilmember Say), Brian Ferrer (Councilmember Pulido) - Community Safety Committee: Vora Sargent and Daniel Kim (Councilmember Say); Rommel De Leon and Mike Rosario (Councilmember Pulido); Mike Ballantine and Jonathan Tan were nominated by Councilmember Hong - Let Freedom Ring Committee: Wei Tan and Joseph Sahi (Councilmember Say)
The city clerk administered oaths of office to those appointees present at the meeting. Councilmembers who nominated appointees motioned and seconded the collective approval; the motion passed by roll call 5-0.
The council also approved the mayor’s nominations for external representatives to regional bodies later in the meeting, including appointments to the California Contract Cities Association, JPIA board, Gateway Cities COG and others; that motion passed with one abstention recorded for an item where a councilmember recused.
Council directed staff to continue making appointments a standing agenda item until all vacancies are filled. Staff also noted it will coordinate oath administration for appointees who were not present and will post updated Form 806 and a City Appointments brochure to the city website.
