Commissioners received an update on the proposed Cerritos arts festival and the ad hoc working group charged with conducting a feasibility study.
Kathy, a city staff member, said the City Council reviewed a report recommending an arts festival and authorized a feasibility study that would use city resources including staff time and some funding. Kathy said Council Member Linda Johnson was appointed as the council’s representative to lead initial research and work directly with staff, but that no meeting has been scheduled and Johnson has not yet shared the composition or scope of the ad hoc group.
Commissioners suggested the ad hoc group include both staff and resident representatives and discussed whether appointments should be made by each council member or by council at large. Kathy said those procedural details had not been settled and that the city would await Council Member Johnson’s plan for how to form and operate the working group. The commission agreed to provide input when the ad hoc group is formed and to forward suggestions through staff when requested.
Why it matters: commissioners said the festival could promote local arts and generate revenue through tourism, hotel occupancy taxes and sales taxes; the feasibility study and committee makeup will shape recommendations to the City Council.
Staff said they will coordinate with Council Member Johnson and return to the commission once the first meeting and committee structure are established.
