A family member of a shooting victim told the City of Passaic council on April 1 that she has received no updates on an November 8 shooting and asked officials to find who shot her relative.
The matter was raised during the public-comment portion of the City of Passaic City Council meeting by a speaker who identified herself as the victim's relative. She said the victim remains traumatized and “still thinks he's a target” because there has been no contact with the family about the case.
The mayor and Police Chief responded that the investigation remains active and that Detective Joshua Medina is handling the matter. The chief said ballistics and other investigative work remain outstanding and that police would not close the case simply because no arrest has been made.
"If someone hasn't been caught, the investigation is still pending," the Police Chief said, and added he would have Detective Medina contact the family the following day. The mayor apologized on behalf of city officials if the family had not received updates and said he would ensure the chief and detectives provide the appropriate information.
Council members clarified that criminal charges typically come from the prosecutor's office and that local police investigations often involve coordination with county or state prosecutors. The mayor said that, to the extent permitted by prosecutors, detectives will meet with family members to provide as many details as can be shared without compromising the investigation.
The council did not take any formal motion or vote on the matter during the meeting. The Police Chief offered to meet with the family and provide contact information so they could receive an update in person.
The comment came amid other public-safety concerns voiced by residents at the same meeting, including complaints about late-night noise and shootings in commercial corridors.
— Ending: The family was told detectives will follow up; no new charges or arrests were announced during the April 1 meeting.
