Sedgwick County commissioners approve Valley Center island annexation, award contracts and adopt proclamations

The Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday approved a City of Valley Center island annexation of roughly nine acres, accepted two contract awards from the Board of Bids and Contracts and adopted two proclamations recognizing National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Youth Educational Empowerment Program (YIP) Financial Literacy Month.
County staff presented the island annexation request from Valley Center, noting the site is undeveloped, agriculturally designated and within the city’s expanded planning area. The board voted to find the annexation would not hinder the proper growth and development of the area or of other cities in Sedgwick County. County staff advised that water and sewer are not planned for immediate connection, that trash and stormwater services will be provided under the city’s franchise agreements, and that road maintenance and fire response arrangements will remain unchanged.
Separately the board approved two purchasing recommendations from the March 27 Board of Bids and Contracts meeting: an award to Cutler Repaving Inc. for the 2025 asphalt rejuvenation project (public works) and a contract for building commissioning services for the South Central Regional Mental Health Hospital. Commissioners also approved routine consent items and reappointed Rita Seivert and Madison Schreiner to the Sedgwick County Advisory Council on Aging and Physical Disabilities.
The commission adopted proclamations recognizing April 2025 as National Child Abuse Prevention Month and proclaiming YIP Financial Literacy Month; representatives of community organizations accepted the proclamations and spoke briefly about local activities tied to each observance. The meeting also included a legislative update from county staff and a short set of committee notes, including recognition of Sedgwick County IT receiving an innovation award for a public-facing community dashboard.
