Johnston City Council approved a contract to clear trees in advance of the Little Beaver Creek Sanitary Sewer Extension Segment B, voting to adopt Resolutions 25-82 and 25-83.
The tree clearing is a preparatory step required before later construction of sewer infrastructure in the Northwest Growth Area. Staff told the council the clearing must occur ahead of construction —to meet the IOD and R requirements for the Indiana bat habitat,— language used by staff during the hearing.
Bids for the tree-clearing project were opened March 6. Staff reported only one responsive bid was received from J. Pedicord, which came in at about $72,050, roughly 3% under the engineer—s opinion of probable cost of $75,000. Staff and the engineer recommended awarding the contract to the low bidder. Council closed the hearing with no public comment and approved both resolutions.
The action authorizes tree clearing in the project area so the subsequent sewer construction (planned later in the year) can proceed while meeting timing constraints tied to habitat protections.
Resolution 25-82 (adoption of plans/specifications/estimate) and Resolution 25-83 (award of contract) were both approved by recorded votes; Council member Brookhart, Council member Evans and others recorded affirmative votes during the roll calls.
Staff did not provide additional funding-source details during the hearing. The project was presented as a necessary, time-sensitive preparatory activity for the sewer extension in the Northwest Growth Area.
