Board splits on personnel actions after closed session; several motions fail on tie votes
Summary

After returning from a closed executive session, the Brownsville ISD Board of Trustees grouped several personnel items and approved the grouped actions (items 1–11) by a unanimous vote. Later, the board considered two separate high-stakes personnel motions.
On Item 12 — proposed nonrenewal of a term contract for a professional teacher (designation SL) at the end of the 2024–25 school year — a motion to approve the nonrenewal failed on a 3–3 vote. On Item 13 — a proposed termination and discharge of a teacher (JJV) for good cause — the motion to terminate likewise failed on a 3–3 vote.
Board members recorded their votes in open session after the executive session concluded. Trustees described the votes as difficult; no further board action was taken on those personnel matters during the meeting. The board chair directed staff to follow the appropriate procedures for any personnel actions and noted that legal counsel had been present for consultation during closed session.
