Doug Richter, a resident addressing the San Gabriel City Council during the public comment period, urged the council to reevaluate the city's police staffing level and consider adding officers for traffic enforcement.
Richter told the council the city has maintained an authorized officer level of 54 "for I don't know how many years" and said attendees at a local forum expressed support for increasing the police force. He described seeing drivers run stop signs, ignore signals and make illegal U-turns in his neighborhood and suggested the city add motorcycle officers to improve enforcement. "If anything, we need more motorcycle policemen," Richter said, and referenced an award of about $40,000 mentioned in a prior State of the City address that he said could be used for that purpose.
His remarks were submitted during the public comment portion of the meeting; council members did not take formal action on the topic during the session. The comment was entered into the meeting record for council consideration.
