The Geary County Schools Board voted unanimously to adopt a written cardiac emergency response plan assembled by health and safety staff that documents existing equipment, team composition and annual drills.
Health and safety staff members Cali Jones and Scott Clark told the board the plan largely formalizes systems the district already uses. Jones said the district had been “a leader in cardiac response” and that much of the plan simply documents existing practice: “we had many of these things already and and mostly, we've just been documenting what we've already been doing to bring this to you tonight.”
Clark summarized plan elements the board required: posting the plan in each building, a minimum team composition for regular school hours and for sponsored after‑school events, travel AEDs for off‑site events, and both monthly checks by building nurses and a deeper annual summer inspection. Clark said AEDs automatically report battery and pad status to an online portal and that the district runs monthly and annual maintenance checks.
Training and costs: Presenters said equipment purchases are current and that the plan does not require increased one‑time capital spending, but it does require ongoing staff development and periodic equipment replenishment. Clark said certification for team members occurs every two years and building nurses run monthly checks; board members and staff discussed the potential value of more frequent refreshers.
Vote and next steps: A board member moved to approve “the attached document, developed as a cardiac emergency response plan by the health and safety staff of USD 475.” The motion passed 6‑0. Presenters said staff will document required annual rehearsals and produce evaluation reports after drills.
Context: Board discussion touched on who is trained (front‑office staff, student‑support monitors, coaches and others), frequency of certification and the district’s capacity to provide refreshers.
