She said Rotary helps cover the bulk of trip costs and that each student currently pays a smaller participant fee (about $1,000 this year) and takes part in local fundraising. She also said the Kenya group often stays with volunteer Rotarians while the Mexico group typically stays in hotels.
Administrators told the board the presentation was informational and not a voting item that night; they said the district typically brings school‑sponsored international travel to the board for formal approval once specific dates, itineraries and liability information are in hand. Board members asked how students are selected and how the trips handle language; the sponsor said students apply, interview with a Rotary panel and, in some cases, speak the language needed for translation during the service. The district superintendent and principal said they would work with the club and Rotary to schedule the formal approval item on an upcoming agenda and ensure required parental permissions and district travel procedures are completed.
