Two residents on April 1 urged the Victorville City Council to fund a dedicated computer room and extended operating hours at the Hook Community Center, saying the change would provide homework help, Wi‑Fi access and a safe space for children of working parents.
Maurice Buckner, a Cal State San Bernardino social work student and community member, described a personal example about youth supervision gaps after school and said a dedicated “community lab” at Hook Community Center could provide homework help and structured activities. Buckner estimated startup costs for basic computers at about $13,000 and $20,000 for more advanced equipment.
Tina Stafford, speaking with other Cal State San Bernardino social work students, said community surveys found residents wanted safe indoor space, Wi‑Fi access, and extended hours to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and additional Saturday hours to serve commuting parents.
Council member Herriman moved that staff place an item on the April 15 agenda for discussion and possible adoption regarding a dedicated community room and extended hours at Hook Community Center. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Council staff and council members said the item will return for further discussion to define scope, costs and possible partnerships, and to identify funding sources and operational details.
