Council authorizes paramedic internship agreement with CalJAC through 2027

The City Council authorized the city manager to execute a paramedic/EMT student education agreement with the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CalJAC) through Dec. 31, 2027. The agreement allows CalJAC students to complete internship fieldwork with Oxnard Fire Department crews; staff characterized the arrangement as reciprocal, since Oxnard trainees sometimes go to other agencies for parts of their training.
Assistant Fire Chief Carson Guthrie explained the program and the cost estimate to the council: “We think that the cost will be about $800 per student, and we think we'll probably be training about 3 to 4, over the course of this agreement.” Guthrie described the program as cost-effective recruitment and training for both the city and partnering agencies.
Councillors raised a technical note about a prerecorded video link used in committee discussion; staff said the report provided adequate detail in writing and the contract proceeds with council authorization. With no public speakers on the item and no further council objections, the council approved the agreement by a recorded vote of 7-0.
