Former Lake Elmo Lions charter revived; community meeting set for April 16

Dennis and Cheryl Kelly told the Lake Elmo City Council on April 1 that they will initiate the formal process to restart a Lake Elmo Lions Club and invited council members and residents to an April 16 community meeting at the community center.
The Kellys said the previous Lake Elmo Lions Club, chartered in August 1956, disbanded after nearly 65 years. Factors they cited included the COVID-19 pandemic, a disrupted fishing-tournament fundraiser and waning membership outreach. Cheryl Kelly said she serves as district governor for Districts 5 and 6 of Lions International, which covers clubs in Washington, Ramsey and Dakota counties.
The Kellys described Lions International as a large volunteer organization and said a revived Lake Elmo club would support local schools and youth athletics, continue vision screening and coordinate fundraising. They cited recent club activities in their own area, including teacher appreciation baskets and improvements to an Oakland Middle School teacher lounge.
The Kellys said they plan a direct-mail campaign of 4,400 pieces to invite residents to the April 16 meeting and asked the council for its support; no formal council action was requested or taken during the public-comment period.
Council members thanked the Kellys for attending and invited residents to the meeting for more information.
