The vote followed a lengthy public comment period and a broad debate on the health tradeoffs of fluoridation, including testimony from pediatric and dental societies supporting fluoridation and from community groups and clinicians urging removal because of recent research and a recent federal court order asking the Environmental Protection Agency to reassess the chemical’s safety.
Commissioner Willy G. Gonzales, the sponsor, framed the measure as a precautionary, public‑health decision rooted in evolving scientific evidence and concern for infants, pregnant women and communities who cannot choose their exposure.
