A group of students enrolled in the Southlake Kids Interested in Leadership program (SKILL) presented a video summary of their yearlong work to the Southlake City Council on April 1 and answered brief questions from council members.
Assistant to the city manager Boris Ullilari introduced the students and thanked Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Talley for ongoing support. Students described hands-on learning about municipal budgeting and community development, a four-day investment internship with Charles Schwab where teams traded with $100,000 in simulated capital, and engagement with the Southlake Chamber of Commerce. Students also visited the Texas State Capitol and met with their state representative. The program marks its 10th anniversary, the presentation said.
Council members commended the students and program staff; the council encouraged broader community awareness of the program and offered congratulations to student participants.
Why it matters: The SKILL program provides hands-on civic education and career exposure for local students, creating a pipeline of youth engagement with city government and local businesses. Students reported learning about budgeting, land use decision-making, and workplace skills.
