Me Squared Cancer Foundation honored by Southlake council after reporting $1.7M in patient grants

Christy Dewey, executive director, told council Me Squared was founded in February 2019 by Mimi Tran after her personal experience with breast cancer. Dewey said the foundation has distributed more than $1.7 million to more than 700 patients since its founding and that patient grants generally range from $500 to $2,500 and are paid directly to providers. The organization requires recipients to be adults (18 or older), newly diagnosed within the past six months, residents of one of 11 DFW counties, and at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty level (Dewey provided example income thresholds: roughly $36,000 for a single person and about $75,000 for a family of four).
Dewey described a patient named Angela who faced ovarian cancer and insurance deductibles totaling roughly $24,000; Me Squared contributed a $2,500 grant to help cover medical expenses. Dewey said the foundation aims to give 80 percent of every dollar to patients and that in 2025 they hope to distribute over $630,000. Me Squared also provides "caring bags" (comfort items) and uses a volunteer patient-advocate model to validate applications and provide emotional support.
Mayor Sean McCaskill presented a proclamation declaring March 8, 2025, as Me Squared Cancer Foundation Day in Southlake and invited the group to accept the recognition and take photos with council.
Why it matters: Me Squared provides financial and emotional support to newly diagnosed adult cancer patients in the DFW region who face high out-of-pocket costs despite having some form of insurance. The council proclamation recognizes the foundation's contribution and raises awareness of the organization's services.
