Contra Costa County held its 31st annual Cesar Chavez celebration on April 1, combining cultural performances with speeches and recognition of local youth. The event, organized by the probation department, included music and dance, remarks on Chavez’s life and legacy, and a set of Youth Hall of Fame awards.
Supervisor Candace Anderson opened the program and introduced speakers and elected‑office representatives in attendance. Armando Quintero, county official and Martinez native, gave a personal account of Cesar Chavez’s life and family traditions and placed Chavez’s organizing work in historical context. A video shown at the event summarized Chavez’s life and the Delano grape strike, and Senator Alex Padilla provided prerecorded remarks urging younger people to uphold Chavez’s legacy.
The celebration featured the Max Cortez band and Arthur Murray Dance Studio performances. The board presented a series of Youth Hall of Fame and Rising Star awards to students recognized for leadership, volunteerism and perseverance; awardees included Christophe Davis, Johan Weber, Hope Huffmeister, Aaliyah Bachar, Megan Rees Doughty, Carlina Mayer and others. Several awardees were not present; the board said photos and certificates would follow.
Speakers urged attendees to carry forward Chavez’s message of nonviolent organizing and community service. The county served lunch after the program and took group photos with awardees.
